What was life like before you joined Excel University?
My name is MK Reesor, and I work for the CPA firm of Miller Cooper out of Chicago, Illinois. We work in the client accounting and advisory services department.
I believe that my Excel background is strong in some areas but weak in others. A lot of times, I felt like I was approaching projects while sitting on a three-legged stool.
You can come to a project and solve it with the tools that you have in your toolbox, but you may not be using the most effective solution or get to that end conclusion as effectively as you would have otherwise.
What has changed since you joined Excel University?
Excel University does help you to be more efficient and effective with the products that you are trying to implement. I use the analogy that if all you have in the toolbox is a hammer, everything looks like a nail!
I only have so much time in a day, and we all want more time. The question is how can we better utilize that time to produce the products and data and metrics that we are asked to pull together?
What makes Excel University better than searching Google or YouTube?
You can find nuggets of information out there, on Google and YouTube. However, looking at certain functions in a larger context is extremely important.
Looking at the larger capacity and context gives you a greater perspective and it might give you a better way to build your model. Excel University provides me with that framework.
I am being more strategic and thoughtful in the design of spreadsheets. This has been the biggest change for me.
What is one of your favorite time-saving techniques?
I always used to look down on pivot tables, but now I can see that they are dynamic and able to expand and contract without breaking any formulas.
The application of a table was a real eye-opener for me in terms of something that was simple yet very powerful.
Would you recommend Excel University?
I would definitely recommend Excel University, and I think the greatest benefactors would be people in the finance realm. Excel is certainly geared more towards accounting and finance people.
However, I think there are a lot of opportunities for people that might be in marketing and other areas outside of finance to learn useful skills with Excel University.
As a program I think the benefits are limitless, and you will get out of it what you put in.
